Drafted by Montreal Expos
Central,
SC - David
Travis became the first ever student-athlete
from Southern Wesleyan University to be drafted in the
Major League Baseball Draft as he was selected in the
13th round by the Montreal
Expos. Travis was the 384th pick overall
and was the fourth infielder taken by the Montreal organization.
Travis
finished his collegiate career this past spring at Southern
Wesleyan where he was named the Georgia Alabama Carolina
Conference Player of the Year. The 6'4" firstbaseman
from Springfield, IL was also selected as the NAIA Region
XIII Player of the Year and was named Honorable Mention
All-America for the 2004 season.
Travis garnered the player of the year award in baseball
after completing a very productive year on the diamond.
He hit .375 with 18 homeruns, 18 doubles and compiled
a slugging percentage of .760 this season.
"Travis
had a remarkable year for us this season and one that
I knew he was capable of having," stated head coach
Mike Gillespie. "He had a really good summer season
in the SCBL
and I feel that really propelled him to have this breakout
season with us this spring. He has the tools to play at
the next level and I know with hard work he will make
this opportunity pay off."
Travis
also picked up GACC all-conference honors as well as player
of the week in the conference, region and he received
national player of the week in the NCCAA three times this
season.
The
Warrior baseball program has had two student-athletes
play professional baseball in the last two years as former
players Luke Syfert and Blake
Honeycutt both played in Independent
Leagues. Syfert, a 2001 graduate from Dawsonville, GA
played in the Northeast League with the Elmira Pioneers
and Honeycutt, a 2003 graduate from Irmo, SC recently
played with the River City Rascals in the Frontier League.
