Golf tournament benefits Southern Wesleyan
Despite a chilly start, the sun came out for a great day of golf Oct. 19 as Southern Wesleyan University held its P.B. Wood Golf Tournament at Pickens Country Club.
Twenty-six teams participated in this year's tournament.
Members of the first place team were Tim Bolding, Lewis McCoy, Mike Fusonie and Dana Crowe. Each player on the first-place team received a set of Nike irons.
The second-place team included Larry Looper, Chip Reeves, Wayne Chappell and Brian Lamb. They won Mizuno drivers.
Third-place team members were Robby Peden, Randy Crowe, Kevin Gasque and Tom Oakley. They received Mizuno fairway woods.
Closest to the pin winners were David Fields and Blake Williamson. They won Ping Karsten Series putters.
The longest drive winner was Dan Wood. He also won a Ping I-Series Putter.
Dale Gilbert, WYFF News 4 weatherman, returned as this year's celebrity golfer.
Proceeds from the P. B. Wood Golf Tournament benefit The Promise Fund, the Annual Fund for SWU. The tournament raised $16,020 for the fund.
"The money from this annual golf tournament directly benefits students at Southern Wesleyan University by providing scholarships, as well as academic and program support," Mary Costello, executive director for development at SWU, said.
The tournament is named for Dr. Paul Wood, a psychologist and professor emeritus at Southern Wesleyan University.
First Citizens Bank was the tournament title sponsor. Corporate sponsors were The Parkette of Pickens and Aramark. Ram Technologies and Palmetto Insurance were the co-sponsors and Piedmont Landscaping and Maintenance was the Hole in One Insurance provider.
