Southern Wesleyan appoints vice president for Adult and Graduate Studies
Southern Wesleyan University announces the appointment of Dr. Gary Carr as its vice president for Adult and Graduate Studies.
Dr. David Spittal, university president, said, “Dr. Carr has a distinguished military and professional career that includes outstanding administrative leadership, proven ability and excellent team-building skills.”
Since October 2009, Carr has been employed at Southern Wesleyan as special assistant to the president for human resource development. In Carr’s new capacity, he will be responsible for Adult and Graduate Studies program administration and operations, in addition to providing leadership for faculty, student and chaplain’s services.
Carr’s new cabinet-level position reports directly to the president and will work in collaboration with the university provost, vice president for marketing and enrollment management and the vice president for finance to coordinate quality control systems, administrative services and student programs.
“The university seeks to provide the highest quality academic programs and support services for students enrolled in its adult and graduate programs and Dr. Carr’s appointment will focus on promoting those standards,” Spittal said.
Carr earned a doctor of ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, Calif., a master’s degree in theology from Duke University, a master’s degree in divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky., and a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
He has served as vice president for translations for the International Bible Society and as division chaplain, 2nd Marine Division and 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. In addition, Carr has served as command chaplain aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk and Battle Force Seventh Fleet.
During his military career, he served as national director of chaplain recruitment and as command chaplain at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Pensacola, Fla. He is an ordained minister in The Wesleyan Church and served as pastor for the Diamond Springs Wesleyan Church in Michigan.
Carr and his wife Karen are the parents of two married children, Lesleigh and Lauren, and a daughter at home, Lydia.
