SWU education builds confidence for Charleston graduate
Romona Gourdine knew she would need a college degree to advance her career and to realize her professional goals.
She also knew that she could become the first in her immediate family to earn a college degree.
While listening to the radio in 2002, Gourdine heard an advertisement for Southern Wesleyan University and decided to move forward towards completing a college degree. Initially, she was concerned about how she would attend classes while working full-time, and prayed for God’s guidance.
Gourdine accomplished her goals, earning a business management degree from Southern Wesleyan’s Charleston education center, then a master’s degree in management in 2007. She graduates this month with an MBA.
“Since my attendance at SWU, I have taken on the responsibility of a supervisor within my department. As a safety officer, the skills that I have acquired at SWU have given me the confidence needed in the areas of classroom management and public speaking,” Gourdine said.
Gourdine received positive feedback from training sessions she has led on her job, reaffirming that what she learned at SWU has been effective in her professional life.
“I knew that I had to earn a college degree, since I would be the one God chose to break a cycle within my family and set the course for future generations to follow,” she said.
She is gratified to see other members of her family enter college. Seeing several of them earn degrees from various institutions and go into professions such as teaching or continuing their studies in graduate programs has been an answer to her prayers.
