SWU offers new major in communication
The latest scoop hot off the Southern Wesleyan University presses is the introduction of a new degree in communication beginning fall 2005.
The degree prepares students for careers in print and electronic media, according to Dr. Laura Black, chair of the Modern Languages program at Southern Wesleyan.
“This major enables students to launch a successful career in a variety of communication fields,” Dr. Black said. “The possibilities are limitless because effective communication is important in any career.”
Designed to accommodate students with a variety of career goals in the field of communication, the degree incorporates the best practices in print and electronic media work as well as cutting-edge digital technology. The program also places a significant emphasis on ethical practices in communications.
Students who pursue this degree will be able to find jobs in newspapers, magazines, radio, television, public relations and Web writing. The 36-hour program will include courses in writing and reporting for both print and electronic media, digital design and delivery and current practices in the field.
The degree also includes an internship to allow students to incorporate specialized practice in their chosen career their senior year.
The university also offers a minor in communication as well as a concentration in communication as part of an English major.
Southern Wesleyan University’s main campus is in Central, S.C. It also has locations for its adult and graduate studies programs in Greenville, Columbia, North Augusta and Charleston.
