BA in English Education

About the Program

This degree program is designed for teacher candidates who want to teach English at the middle school or high school level. There are two main areas of emphasis: English and education. The English major component includes 30 hours of courses (beyond the general education requirement) to meet South Carolina certification standards in English.

What do students enrolled in the English Education program do?

As an English Education major, you will learn to reflect a Christian ethic of care when teaching in the classroom. You will study effective educational practices based on current research and become familiar with many types of literature and literary criticism. Additionally, you will practice writing creatively and teaching others to write creatively.

Is this major right for you?

You might consider an English Education major if you want to teach English, Literature or Creative Writing, desire to learn all aspects of English grammar, and are comfortable working with students in a classroom setting.

In our English Education program, students have many opportunities such as membership in Sigma Tau Delta, an international honors society for English majors, as well as many opportunities to complete practicums in schools prior to beginning the student teaching experience. English Education graduates from Southern Wesleyan University are highly successful in attaining teaching employment upon graduation.
