 An Overview of Alpha Chi
Alpha Chi is a national honor society for college juniors and seniors. The purpose of Alpha Chi is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. As a general honor society, Alpha Chi admits to membership students from all academic disciplines. One of the most elite honors a college student can earn, membership in Alpha Chi is limited to the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes.
Nationally, there are more than 300 chapters of the society located on college campuses in almost every state and in Puerto Rico. Approximately 11,000 new members are inducted into Alpha Chi every year.
The official shield and key for the society bear a lamp of learning and the initials AX in raised letters. The colors are emerald green and sapphire blue, signifying victory and truth. The Local Chapter of Alpha Chi
South Carolina DELTA at Southern Wesleyan University
- Active membership shall be restricted to regular students who are of junior or senior standing.
- To be eligible for membership, a person must have completed at least 60 hours of course work at Southern Wesleyan University.
- To be eligible for election, the student must have completed not less than one-half of the credits required for graduation.
- The entire record of the student, including transfer courses and courses failed, shall be considered.
- If the grade point ratio earned in an institution previously attended is higher than that at SWU, only the SWU grades shall be considered.
- Membership is limited to the top ten percent of the senior class and top five percent of the junior class.
- Eligibility for membership is determined by the academic dean based on information from the registrar.
- Election is by the Academic Council during the spring semester of each year.
- Lifetime dues are $35 (national and local).

Chapter History
In 1981, Southern Wesleyan University (formerly Central Wesleyan College) formed the fourth chapter of Alpha Chi in South Carolina, becoming South Carolina Delta Chapter.
The first sponsor was Dr. James Schmutz, Professor of Chemistry. Assistant sponsors were Dr. Gloria Bell and Dr. Laura Black (formerly Dr. Laura Vinson).
Charter members were Jean Barton, Deborah Byrum Clever, Mary Katherine Duncan, Barbara M. Dutschke, Donna G. Earwood, Regina R. Lane, Jane M. Olerud, Judy S. Saxon, Carolyn M. Simpson, Glenna Towles, and Timi Wrinn.
