Honors Program Summary - FAQ

We believe God expects us to be good stewards of the intellectual gifts that we are given. In this light, the Honors Programs at Southern Wesleyan University is designed to prepare academically advanced undergraduate students for graduate school and leadership opportunities through an 20-credit course sequence culminating in a final senior project.

Admission to the program is competitive. Students generally are expected to have an SAT I score of 1200 or its equivalent and a high school GPA of at least 3.5. Qualified students are contacted prior to the fall semester of their freshmen year to determine their suitability for the program. Transfer students are handled on a customized basis. Students are expected to maintain a 3.5 GPA during their time at Southern Wesleyan.

Q. The idea of a final project is scary. How am I going to do this?

A. It is our responsibility to prepare you for this. We have students presenting work at professional and undergraduate research conferences as early as their sophomore year.

Q. How does the 20-credit sequence affect my course load?

In most cases, the sequence easily meshes with your electives and major requirements. For Education majors, the sequence can be adjusted to accommodate your practicum.

Q. Is there a scholarship accompanying being an Honors student?

A. No, any scholarship or financial aid you receive is independent of your Honors status. However, the program does provide funds for conference presentations and research not available to non-Honors students. Also, Honors students are frequently recommended for on-campus paid positions and off-campus internships.

Q. What if I am interested in the Honors Program but you did not pick me?

A. Desire is an important consideration. If you think you are qualified, please contact the Honors Program Director.

Q. I am coming to SWU as an athlete. How can I be in the Honors Program?

A. There is nothing to prevent an athlete from being in the Honors Program. As with all aspects of their academic program, athletes need to manage their schedule carefully to make sure that sports does not interfere.

Q. What do Honors students do when they graduate?

A. All of our Honors students either continue to graduate school or get jobs immediately after graduating from SWU. Recent graduates interested in graduate school have ended up at Harvard University, University of South Carolina, Clemson, and East Tennessee State University. Other graduates move directly into careers in education, counseling, and ministry.
