How do I download an eBook onto my eReader?

For iPad, iPhone, and Kindle Fire users:

  1. Create an Adobe account if you do not have one. It is not necessary to download Adobe Digital Editions, but you must create an account. (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm?nl=1&nf=1).
  2. Open the browser on your mobile device and install the Bluefire Reader app (http://www.bluefirereader.com/blog/?p=158).
  3. Open EBSCO ebooks in your mobile device browser and create an EBSCO account if you do not have one. Log in to this account.
  4. On your mobile device, select the book you wish to download;
  5. Select “Download this ebook (offline)”;
  6. Select your desired checkout period (1 to 7 days);
  7. Select “Checkout and Download.” This should prompt the Bluefire Reader to open. Select “Open in Bluefire”.

For Nook users:

  1. Create and Adobe account if you do not have one and download Adobe Digital Editions. (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm?nl=1&nf=1).
  2. Open EBSCO ebooks in your Nook browser and create an EBSCO account if you do not have one. Log in to this account.
  3. On your Nook, select the book you wish to download;
  4. Select “Download this ebook (offline)”;
  5. Select your desired checkout period (1 to 7 days);
  6. Select “Checkout and Download.” When prompted, save the book to Adobe Digital Editions.
  7. Connect your Nook to the computer via USB cable. You should see the Nook appear in Adobe Digital Editions (on the left side, in the listing of bookshelves, underneath all items/borrowed/purchased/recently read).
  8. With your mouse, drag the book to the Nook to download it to the device.

Other Mobile Devices (Sony Digital Readers, smart phones, etc.)

  1. Create an Adobe account, download Adobe Digital Editions, and authorize the program on your mobile device (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm?nl=1&nf=1).
  2. Open EBSCO ebooks on your computer and create an EBSCO account if you do not have one.
  3. Log in to this account.
  4. Select the book you wish to download; Click “Download this ebook (offline)”;
  5. Select your desired checkout period (1 to 7 days);
  6. Click “Checkout and Download.”
  7. Open your downloaded EBSCO ebook in Adobe Digital Editions.
  8. Connect your device to the computer via USB cable.
  9. When prompted, authorize your device to access Adobe Digital Editions.
  10. After authorization, the device will appear as a new bookshelf in your library.
  11. Transfer your book by clicking and dragging to the device bookshelf.

Is scanning available?

Yes. The printer on the main level also functions as a scanner. There are instructions and a code near the machine for SWU student and faculty use.

Where is the photocopier?

As soon as you walk into the library, there is a doorway on your right. Through the doorway is a photocopier. Copies are ten cents each. The machine takes coins or dollar bills.

Another copier is available in the Reference area.  This copier also serves as the printer for the computers in this part of the library.  This copier only makes black and white copies. See a librarian for scanning/printing/copying help.

How do I get to the elevator?

From the front doors go straight through the glass doors in front of you. You will see three reference computers on your left and the large reference desk on your right. Just past these on the left is the hallway where the elevator is located.

Where are the restrooms?

There are restrooms on each floor of the library.

  • On the main floor: When entering through the front door, turn to your right and go straight through both doorways. There are men's and women's bathrooms on your left. There is also a handicap-accessible bathroom located in the hallway that leads to the elevator and the back stairwell.
  • On the second floor: There are men's and women's bathrooms to the left of the stairwell located at the front of the building.  The handicap-accessible bathroom upstairs is located in the hallway beside the elevator.
  • On the lower level:  From the front stairwell, the ladies' room is to the left and around the corner near the end of the hallway.  The men's room is to the right and around the corner near the end of the hallway.

Where are all the books?

Our reference books are on the main floor. No, these aren't all the books we have. Our circulating books are located on the second floor of the library. 

Where are the CDs, DVDs, and videos?

Videotapes and DVDs are located on the second floor at the top of the stairs located in the front of the library. CDs and audiotapes are located in the Listening Room. Record albums (LPs) are located on the upper level near the books with call number 780s. These are on a shelf on the back side of the walled section that includes the elevator.

How do I get downstairs?

As soon as you enter the library, turn right and go through the first doorway. On your left is the stairwell leading downstairs. Once downstairs, Information Technology offices, and the Brown computer lab are to your left. The Green computer lab is to your right. You can also use the elevator to access all three levels.

How do I get upstairs?

As soon as you enter the library, turn right and go through the first doorway. On your left is the stairwell leading upstairs. Another stairwell is in the back of the building -- go through the glass doors, past the reference desk, and through the doorway on your left. Immediately on your right you will see the stairwell. You can also use the elevator. The upper level houses our circulating books, the Clayton Genealogical collection, and four study rooms.

Where are the study rooms?

One study room is located on the upper level of the library. There are three study rooms on the main floor, along with several comfortable chairs and couches. There is one study room on the lower level.

Where is the Clayton room?

The Clayton Genealogical collection is located on the lower level of the library. Go down the stairway at the front of the library. Go to the right and follow the hallway around the corner and down the hallway until you see the "Clayton Collection" door on your right. For more information about this collection, click here.

My professor wants me to watch a movie. Do you have a VCR/DVD player I can use?

Yes, the listening/viewing room downstairs has a VCR, DVD player, CD player, and record player.

Where are the current periodicals?

The current periodicals are on the main floor of the library. They are listed alphabetically by title and are directly to the right as you proceed through the glass doors.

Where are the older periodicals?

The older periodicals are on the second floor. To find them, go up the back stairwell and walk straight across the back of the building toward the windows. If you use the elevator, turn right upon exiting and walk straight across toward the windows. The older periodicals are bound, so they will look like big, thick books. They are arranged in call number order. To find the call number, use SWUcat or one of the periodical notebooks in the reference area.

Where is the tutoring center?

The Student Success Center is located on the second floor of the library, on the front side of the building. See http://www.swu.edu/academics/tutoring-and-disability-services/ for more information.

Where is Information Technology (IT)?

The Information Technology offices are located on the lower level of the library. Go down the stairway at the front of the library. Go to the left and follow the hallway to the back of the building to the IT helpdesk.
