Curriculum

Southern Wesleyan University offers a B. A. and a B. S. in biology. The B. A. makes it possible for persons who are not planning to be professional scientists, or who decide to major in biology after a year or two of college, or who want to teach biology in high school, to obtain a biology degree. The B. S. is more rigorous, and is better preparation for biology-related careers. It includes all courses required for entry into almost all medical schools, and is basically identical to our Pre-Medicine/Pre-Dentistry major.

Requirements for the Biology B. S.

Eight hours of (200-400 level) Biology electives

On August 11, 2004, the faculty of SWU approved a concentration in ecology, as an option for biology majors pursuing either a B. A. or B. S. A student seeking a degree in biology with this option must take, for the eight hours of elective specified above, BIOL 4354 and BIOL 2074. BIOL 2254 must also be taken (the above table gives a choice of 2254 and 2074, but both must be taken, to complete this concentration). In addition, this concentration requires taking BIOL 3303, Animal Behavior, and BIOL 3074, Field Biology, which are not required of biology majors not taking a concentration in ecology.

This option does not appear in the 2004-5 SWU Catalog, which had already been published when it was approved.

See also the general graduation requirements, which include, for this major, Chemistry 1004-1054 as the lab science requirement, either Applied Calculus (MATH 1033) or Calculus I (MATH 2504) as the math requirement.

The B. S. requires all of the above, except that the 8 hours of biology elective must include BIOL 4354, Comparative and Environmental Physiology. Additional requirements are Microbiology, BIOL 3104, a 4 hour course; Organic Chemistry 2504-2514, 8 hours; an additional 4 hour upper level chemistry course; Physics 2044 and 2054, 8 hours. Also, the Math item listed above in the general education requirements must be Calculus 2504 for the B. S. This makes a total of 68 credit hours.

Biology Teacher Certification requirements are the same as the B. A., plus microbiology and the first semester of physics. In addition, 31 hours of education courses are required, and the student should take both a world civilization course and U. S. history. Psychology must also be taken. (Some of these courses meet general graduation requirements)

The SWU biology certification program is approved by a national accrediting agency, and successful graduates of this program are certified to teach in a number of states.
