BS in Mathematics

WHAT IS THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MATHEMATICS?

This degree program develops in students a competency in key areas of mathematics, based on a Christian worldview – that God created the world and the order in it, He has given us the desire and the ability to discover and understand it, and that we are responsible to use analytic and logical skills learned in mathematics study to investigate, analyze, and make decisions that are beneficial to creation. We believe that we have God-given responsibilities to treat other persons according to the Golden Rule. Students are also required to take classes in Bible and philosophy.

WHAT DO STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE MATHEMATICS PROGRAM DO?

As a Mathematics major, you will learn to integrate faith with learning in mathematics and be able to discuss application mathematics concepts and processes to real life situations. You will develop competency in calculus, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, college geometry, abstract algebra, computer programming and applications, statistics, history and philosophy of mathematics and other courses. You will learn to employ tools utilized in mathematics including graphics calculators, computer software programs, presentation software, etc. You will learn various ways of verifying propositions in mathematics including graphical techniques, algebraic techniques, deductive and inductive arguments, Venn diagrams, etc.

IS THIS MAJOR RIGHT FOR YOU?

You might consider a Mathematics major if you have a desire to advance to careers that tend to be technical or analytical such as engineering or actuarial science, require analytical techniques in research or analysis, desire to teach mathematics, like to work with numerical ideas, desire to work in graphics and design, interested in systems analysis, interested in statistical collection, analysis, application, prediction, etc. If you are sufficiently competent and motivated this major may be right for you.
