Searching and pursuing

Growing up in a Wesleyan Church, Zach Derr has always known about Southern Wesleyan University. With an offer of the soccer scholarship, Zach chose to come to SWU.

Derr came in undecided. However, during the winter of his freshman year, he was called to study in religion major.

“I am looking towards becoming a religion professor, maybe at SWU” Derr said.

Derr won the scholarship to intern with Greeley Wesleyan Church in Colorado last summer and spent 10 weeks there. It was a wonderful experience for him. He did almost everything in the church such as preparing for sermons, calling meetings, counseling, doing budgets, visiting people in hospital, and working with children and youth.

SWU allows me to take faith and make it my own

SWU has provided a lot of strong friendship for Derr.

“The professors have been amazing,” he said. He worked a lot with Dr. Bob Black, a religion professor at Southern Wesleyan University who inspired him about the church ministry.

“Southern Wesleyan has also helped me find my fiancée,” said Derr with a smile.
