JoAn Hudson '86
Biology
Clemson, SC

Director of top-ranked research facility credits SWU faculty for her success.

In today’s high-tech industry, even the most minute details matter.

When those details are broken down to the molecular level, JoAn Hudson gets involved.

Hudson, who earned her biology degree from Southern Wesleyan University, now directs the Electron Microscope Facility at Clemson University, currently the most advanced electron microscope lab in the nation. Her job involves finding solutions for industry and researchers by characterizing materials at the atomic and molecular level.

Balance between career and school in sharper focus.

“My decision to attend Southern Wesleyan University was based on the need for me to attend classes yet allow time to work a full time job, Hudson said.

For Hudson’s professors at SWU, the details of her academic success mattered.

“Once enrolled I found that there was much more, the faculty at the institution helped me discover my strengths and more importantly gave me the time and attention I needed to overcome my weaknesses,” Hudson said. “The attention that was given to me to succeed and not give up is one of the reasons for the accomplishments that I have achieved since I left SWU.”
