It’s a community
“It’s more of a community here,” said Byron Wimphrie, an education major and member of the Warriors Basketball Team who transferred to Southern Wesleyan University after spending his freshman year at another university.
“On the campus everything is close together – no place is too far for walking,” said Byron, adding that the faculty and staff are courteous and open.
“The professors really care about their students and whether or not they learn. They know your name.” Byron also discovered that at SWU it’s easy to make friends.
Finding God
Byron says he has grown spiritually since coming to SWU, thanks to numerous opportunities for spiritual growth includine Bible studies at Mullinax Hall, where he lives.
“The main reason is it’s a place to find God,” Byron said. studies at Mullinax Hall.
Byron said the education program is a challenging one, but with challenges come greater confidence in the classroom. Spending many hours of observation in area schools, Byron has already taught some lessons and put to practical use what he’s learned from his studies.
“Right now I’m majoring in physical education and trying to be a basketball coach. My dream is to coach college basketball,” said Byron.
When someone asks Byron about his choice to attend Southern Wesleyan, he says, “I would tell them it’s a great place to get involved in things and to open up and find out about yourself. It’s a great place to have friendships.”
