North Augusta, SC
Realizing a true calling
AGS master of education student Nicole Scott has a background in electronic engineering and worked in manufacturing. While training employees at her plant, Scott began to realize her true calling was in education.
Nicole enrolled in Georgia’s Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (TAP), to become certified to teach in the state’s public schools. In 2004 she became a sixth-grade teacher at Wrens Middle. She also coaches a girl’s basketball team at her school, sharing with others the game she enjoyed playing as a youngster.
After a few years of teaching, Nicole felt a need to expand her horizons and gain more experience. She discovered the master’s degree program in education offered by SWU as an attractive alternative.
“The program was so conducive to working people, it was enticing,” she said. Meeting one night a week for class and one night a week with her cohorts proved an excellent fit for Nicole’s busy schedule.
“It couldn’t have any more convenient,” Scott said, adding that she couldn’t find a comparable program in her area. Scott also appreciates the supportiveness and caring attitudes of her professors.
Nicole was recently named Teacher of the Year at Wrens Middle School in Wrens, Ga.
