SWU proved to be the right choice
Whitney Wright, a senior education major, learned about SWU at an early age from her mother and her aunt, who both attended the university. Also, her uncle, Charles Wimphrie, is head men's basketball coach.
“I originally wanted to attend SWU after high school but wasn't sure I could afford it, so I went to a public university instead,” Whitney recalls. But after a semester she decided she would pay for her own education and attend Southern Wesleyan. To Whitney’s surprise, she received four scholarships – two of them from SWU.
They were interested in me
One of the first staff members Whitney met provided her with the information necessary to get both academically and financially-acquainted with SWU. More important still is the feeling of community she has experienced.
“One thing that I noticed about SWU immediately was the Christian-based community. Since arriving at SWU, I have been positively influenced by friends who care about the direction I'm taking. Besides my roommates, I've made a ton of friends at SWU. My favorite place to hang out on campus is my apartment, because I never get to be there.” Whitney’s favorite places off campus include malls, movie theatres, bowling alleys, cliff-diving spots and the lakes nearby.
Giving back
Since coming to SWU, Whitney has been a statistician for volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball; a member of Sigma Delta Beta as a peer leader for freshman seminar; a member of Student Life Council; a member of Cultural Awareness Committee; and a tutor with Academic Success Center.
“I have built a stronger relationship with Christ at SWU,” Whitney says.
