Music major finds harmony at SWU

Music has been a part of Michael Wooten’s life since grade school. Influenced by his grandfather, who loved listening to classical music, Michael began playing violin in sixth-grade and started singing in high school.

Michael briefly considered attending college in Florida but a visit to SWU changed his perspective.

“I first came on campus when I went for an audition with the music department. From the first time I stepped on the SWU campus I felt peace - there was no pressure with anything. That helped me to choose where to attend,” he said.

Friends.

“Meeting friends here is amazingly easy. It seems clichéd to say this but it really is a family atmosphere. The first person you meet on campus is more likely going to greet you with a smile. They want to learn about you and it really helps.” Michael is amazed at how his friends have helped him through difficulties he has encountered.

“People just simply do stuff to help one another. I just saw Christ in my friends,” he said.

“For me, personally being well-rounded is exactly what I’ve accomplished at SWU – whether it comes in my communication skills, performance skills – anything – I feel the things I’ve learned at SWU will not only help me in the academic world but also in the social world.”

Making an impact.

What is Michael’s advice to anyone considering SWU?

"If you want a school where they will just teach you and send you out – sure – take anywhere else. But if you want a school where they will embed in you the values you’ll use when you graduate – that will help you impact the lives of others – then come to SWU.”
