Society recognizes academic achievement of nontraditional students

Southern Wesleyan University recently established the Omicron Sigma Chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society and inducted 44 charter members.

Alpha Sigma Lambda, which focuses on the academic achievements of adult students, was established through the efforts of Tracy Landrith, a graduate of the university’s Adult and Graduate Studies program.

According to Joy Bryant, executive director of alumni and constituent relations at Southern Wesleyan University, Landrith submitted a proposal and donated funding to start the new chapter. The Southern Wesleyan chapter was established in April and it plans to elect officers and hold quarterly meetings.

Requirements for membership are that the student must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2; have a GPA among the highest 10 percent of qualified students; submit a one-time, lifetime membership fee; have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours at Southern Wesleyan University; and to be at least 25 years old. For this induction, the members’ GPA averaged 3.76.

Founded in 1945, Alpha Sigma Lambda is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship and recognizes high scholastic achievement in adult students. It strives to provide a stimulating impetus to highly motivated students in continuing higher education and recognizes the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence.

Charter members were inducted during a ceremony June 3 at Southern Wesleyan’s campus in Central and at the university’s Charleston, Columbia, Greenville and North Augusta locations.

New members from Charleston are listed as follows:

Philip Clark, Summerville, S.C.; Julia Gunderson, Ladson, S.C.; Holly Mellix,  Summerville, S.C.; Janece VanWart, North Charleston, S.C.
