Teacher of Year at Airport High encourages freshmen |
Ruth Anne Potts |
Airport High School saluted Ruth Anne Potts, a 2004 Southern Wesleyan University graduate, as Teacher of the Year for 2010-2011.
Potts, who works with the freshman program at Airport High in West Columbia, S.C., is one of the first faces incoming freshmen see.
“I love working with ninth-graders and seeing how much they grow within that year,” said Potts, who helps students make a successful transition from the middle school years to high school.
“I’m there to support them and want them to know I’m there for them and that they can always approach me. I’d like to be an encouragement for my students in the same way my professors at Southern Wesleyan were to me,” said Potts.
Potts never forgot the support of her professors when she was majoring in education at Southern Wesleyan University.
“I loved having smaller classes and Christian professors who would encourage me in things in life as well as my education,” Potts said. “I always knew I could go to them. I appreciated their feedback and I’m thankful God led me to Southern Wesleyan University.” Potts added that she continues to be best friends with many people she met at the university.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English education from Southern Wesleyan, Potts earned her M.Ed. degree in secondary education from the University of South Carolina. She began as a substitute teacher for Lexington District Two at Fulmer Middle School. Potts has been at Airport High since fall, 2006.
