    Emily Germain, left, instructor of psychology, was recognized as Faculty Member of the Year and Thomas Parham, computer support specialist, was named Staff Member of the Year during honors convocation April 29.

    During Southern Wesleyan University’s honors convocation April 29, Emily Germain, assistant professor of psychology, was recognized as Faculty Member of the Year and also received the Ken Dickens Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dickens, right, a 1953 graduate and a retired educator, established this award to recognize an outstanding faculty member each year.

    Southern Wesleyan University recognized Emily Germain as Faculty Member of the Year and Thomas Parham was named Staff Member of the Year during honors convocation April 29 on the campus in Central.

    Germain was recognized for her creativity in the classroom, integrating her faith into her teaching, mentoring of students, and involvement in athletics and in her community. A Southern Wesleyan psychology graduate, Germain returned to SWU in 2010 as a faculty member in the Division of Social Sciences. She is also director of the university’s honors program. Germain earned her MA in marriage and family therapy from Richmont Graduate University. Nominations for her honor were submitted by students, faculty and staff, then selected by a committee.Germain also received the Ken Dickens Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dickens, a 1953 graduate and a retired educator, established this award to recognize an outstanding faculty member each year.

    Parham, a computer support specialist, was recognized for going “above and beyond what is expected.” He was noted for being “naturally upbeat, positive and easy to be around,” and able to handle stressful situations well and with a Christian attitude. He is also a Southern Wesleyan graduate, having earned his BS in business in 2013. He joined the university staff in 2012. Faculty, staff, and students nominated staff members and the staff Council Executive Committee chose the top three with the most nominations. Faculty, staff, and students then voted online from the top three nominations.
