For those who sense a call to ministry, Southern Wesleyan University is introducing a new ministry track that simply “adds up” to an inventive, comprehensive experience and brings a student's calling into greater focus.

Through its Division of Religion, Southern Wesleyan is offering the 3+1 religion track this fall, designed to prepare students for practical ministry in a variety of settings. Students will learn to apply scriptural principles to contemporary life by taking what they learn in the classroom for three years and diving into a ministry residency during their fourth year.

The fourth year provides an attractive alternative to a conventional four-year ministry program and potentially reduces educational expenses. Many churches and ministries offer a monthly stipend and some offer free accommodations.

Students enrolled in the 3+1 religion track will start cultivating a pattern of spiritual accountability and actively participate in ministry before graduation. They will also learn to effectively and persuasively preach and teach. They will plan and conduct worship services, give pastoral care, and participate in basic counseling. As students gain a deeper understanding of the theological implications of life issues, they will also experience what it means to share the Gospel, to provide administrative leadership for ministry, and to advance their personal spiritual development.

The 3+1 curriculum option provides ministry preparation that is effective for traditional and contemporary churches of all sizes. Students can see firsthand how ministry happens in a church with its own unique mission. "Many students improve best by 'doing.' They feel most alive when they're actively engaged in something that's 'on the ground.' Think about this—a full year of valuable experience as a resident mentored by some amazing, dynamic pastors and leaders even before you graduate," said Dr. Mike Tapper, chair of Southern Wesleyan's Division of Religion.

Details about the 3+1 Religion track can be found at swu.edu/3+1.
