CENTRAL, S.C. – The Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Management at Southern Wesleyan University encourages families to get together and go play.

“Today, the traditional family is being redefined,” said Dave Seamans, assistant professor of physical education at Southern Wesleyan University. “Family structure as well as family members’ roles and responsibilities are in a state of change. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of blended and single parent families.”

Although the definition of family is changing, the family concept remains a very important part of our culture, he said.

“The family continues to be one of the primary influences on the development of children,” Seamans said.

Children decide how they will use 40 percent, or 5 hours, of their non-school time, he said. On weekends and during the summer months, children’s discretionary time increases.

“Parents have a vital role in teaching children to make wise choices about the constructive use of their free time, including participation in recreational activities,” Seamans said. “There is a need to encourage families to play together and to recognize and appreciate the values of family recreation and play in building strong families.”

The American Association for Leisure and Recreation and Southern Wesleyan University endorse recreation as a means to help build strong family relationships. “Through participation in family recreation, there are opportunities for teaching, maintaining, and reinforcing family values,” Seamans said. “Play and recreation help to enhance, enrich and promote family well-being and unity which will result in building stronger families.”

National Family Recreation Week is June 1-7 each year, with the first Saturday in June being recognized as National Family Recreation Day.

“We encourage all families to spend time together in recreational activities that promote physical, emotional, mental and social development and growth,” Seamans said. “What a better way to kick off the summer than spending leisure time with family members.”
