In light of the recent tragic church shootings in Texas, Tennessee and South Carolina, many pastors and church leaders are wondering if they are doing enough to ensure the safety of their congregation and security of their facilities.

There will be a church safety-security seminar at Southern Wesleyan University in Central Jan. 20, 2018, for clergy and others in church leadership in any denomination. Representatives from the Safety Team of ALIVE Wesleyan Church, along with Jason Cansler and Jason Rochester, representatives from Brotherhood Mutual Insurance, will discuss topics that will include creating a safety plan, essentials for having an effective security team, and legal issues. There will also be a question/answer session.

Cansler serves as safety and medical director of Westgate Baptist Church and School (WBCS) in Spartanburg. Prior to starting the security program at WBCS, Cansler served as a security team member at Rock Springs Baptist Church, a congregation of more than 3,000 members. He serves as a consultant for Rochester Insurance with a focus on church security startups and development. Cansler has accumulated more than 13 years of experience in the security field, including five years as a decorated reserve law enforcement officer, three years as a South Carolina State Constable and more than five years as armed security officer licensed by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Rochester is a graduate of Pensacola Christian College with a bachelor of science degree and also a graduate of South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Reserve Officer Program. He joined Rochester Insurance as an agent in 2013 after spending five years as an assistant pastor in Reading, Pa. After graduating from Northland International University in 2009, he earned his Master of Arts in Biblical Studies from Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary in Lansdale, Pa. Rochester Insurance partners with more than 1,500 churches and ministries in South Carolina. Since representing Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company in the early 1990’s, they have dedicated their entire staff exclusively to ministries, ranging from child safety resources to various aspects of church safety.

This free seminar will take place from 10 a.m. to Noon in The Founders, on the lower level of the University Dining Commons.
