Southern Wesleyan University seeks an Assistant Director of Library Services with primary responsibility for reference and information literacy. The Assistant Director participates in the management and administration of the library as well as provides leadership for user services. The Assistant Director will participate in planning for a curriculum-wide program of information literacy for the traditional and state-wide adult undergraduate programs. Responsibilities include organization of and participation in information literacy and reference (including evening and weekend hours). Additional responsibilities may include planning and assessment of programs and services; design and maintenance of library web pages and online tutorials; and participation on university committees. This position carries faculty status without rank or tenure. The position is available July 1, 2009 (some flexibility is possible).
Requirements include ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; excellent collaborative and communication skills; and evidence of a Christian testimony. Preferred qualifications include 3+ years experience in public services; experience in the provision of reference and information literacy education.
The primary duties for this position are coordination and provision of reference and information literacy services. The assistant director will be our lead reference and instruction librarian. All librarians participate in reference and information literacy activities. Currently, the Rickman Library has a staff of six-three professional positions and three support staff members. We expect to hire an additional librarian for reference and information literacy within one to two years. SWU is preparing to begin our Quality Enhancement Plan in the area of information literacy. This will involve the broader university, but the library will be a part of this process.
The assistant director will participate in library administration and will assist the director in planning, assessment, developing policies, and anything else I need help with. Other duties may be assigned based on the needs of the library and the skills/interests of the individual hired. This will likely include updating library web pages within a content management system. Other possibilities include ILL, Archives, procedures relative to our automated system, etc. Southern Wesleyan participates with six other colleges in the use of a III library system. As a faculty member, the assistant director will be expected to attend faculty meetings and other events and may be asked to participate in various committees.
Southern Wesleyan University is a good place to work. We are a small, liberal arts institution with professional degrees in business and education. The traditional campus student body is in the 600-700 range. Our non-traditional programs (undergraduate and masters level at five regional locations) currently enroll about 1700 students. The campus is in a good location with mild winters (a few cold days) and warm summers (some hot days). Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the university is within a two hour drive of Atlanta and Charlotte. The university is an institution of the Wesleyan Church (www.wesleyan.org). A person does not have to be a member of a Wesleyan Church to work here, but is expected to support the university Mission and Statement of Faith and to agree to follow the lifestyle expectations of the university.
