DAY OF SERVICE 2014 Photos

SWU Day of Service - Tuesday, March 17, 2015

The Day of Service is a day that has been dedicated to serving others. In honor of this day, there are no classes for traditional students. This year it is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Some projects will occur in the morning, afternoon, or all day. Students will receive chapel credit for participating in one of the University sponsored projects.

Our Daily Bread (Seneca, SC)

Our Daily Bread is a mission that provides a free daily meal to all walk-ins. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve lunch to the area’s homeless and hungry.

Potter’s Place (Central, SC)

The Potter's Place provides an environment of quiet solitude in which those who come can seek God and be molded into the vessel "The Potter" desires. Volunteers are needed for removing and hauling dead wood to burn piles, painting, window washing, planting flowers, and general outdoor work.

Gleaning House Ministries (Pickens, SC)

Gleaning House Ministries exists to glean the left over resources (food, clothing, etc.) of the fortunate and distribute it to the less fortunate of Pickens County. Students will be asked to help carry boxes of food out to clients. Volunteers are needed to also pack boxes for the upcoming week and assist clients with filling out paperwork.

Golden Corner Ministries (Seneca, SC)

The Food Pantry is physically located roughly in the center of the county in Seneca, South Carolina. Recipients come from all over the county, principally from the three major cities of Seneca, Walhalla, and Westminster. The Food Pantry works closely with local churches, civic organizations and other charities in the County to identify and include needy families. Volunteers are needed to make boxes of non-perishable food items for senior citizens.

Golden Harvest Food Bank (Liberty, SC)

Golden Harvest Food Bank, “provides quality food and other grocery products to those in need.” Through a variety of services such as the food bank, community educational programs, and direct service programs, Golden Harvest is committed to addressing issues of hunger and nutritional need. Volunteers will be needed to stock and organize the warehouse.

Table Rock Beautification (Pickens, SC)

Table Rock Wesleyan Camp is a year-round camp, conference and retreat center, nestled at the foot of one the area’s most scenic mountains, Table Rock. The site has over 200 acres adjacent to Table Rock State Park in Pickens, SC and serves as the host site for functions of the SC District of the Wesleyan Church and its offices. Volunteers are needed for both indoor and outdoor work.

Foothills Trail (Pickens, SC or Oconee County)

The Foothills Trail (FHT) is a 77-mile walking path connecting Table Rock State Park in Pickens County to Oconee State Park in Oconee County. The FHT is popular in the southeast for people wanting to experience solitude in a natural setting. Portions of the trail are maintained by volunteers. Winter and early spring are typically high demand-times due to downed limbs and other debris due to winter storms. Participants can expect to cut and drag downed trees, trim brush, and possibly repair any damage to the trail bed.

The Hundred Acre Wood (SWU Central Campus)

The Hundred Acre Wood is on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University. This developing area will be the home to walking trails and a low ropes course for the SWU community. Volunteers are needed to build a trail bed, clear brush, build ropes course features, and spread mulch.

Asbury Hills Camp and Retreat Center (Cleveland, SC)

Asbury Hills is on 2,000 acres nestled in the northwest corner of South Carolina in the Blue Ridge mountains. Our mission is to serve all people for Christian birth, growth and renewal. We offer summer camp experiences for children and youth, and retreat events for children, youth, adults and families throughout the year serving churches, non-profit organizations and the community. Volunteers are needed for removing and hauling dead wood to burn piles, painting, window washing, planting flowers, and general outdoor work.

South Main Crisis Center

Supported by the United Way of Anderson, the South Main Crisis Center in Anderson, SC is in need of volunteers to help with the refurbishing of the facility. Recently vandalized for it's copper, help is need with general clean-up, painting, and planting flowers for the spring.

5 Point Food Pantry

“We exist to bring glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ by meeting the needs of the hungry residents of Pickens County, SC.” Volunteers are invited to come serve on Tuesday at the Dream Center located in Easley (200 West D Avenue). Normal food pantry hours are 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, but volunteers are needed all throughout the afternoon to get the food ready for families.

Day of Service Drivers

Volunteers are needed to transport students and faculty to various off-campus sites. Students must have completed the University driving course and be listed on the University’s insurance as a driver. Volunteers are needed for the morning afternoon, or all day.
