Workshop targets elementary writing teachers

, S.C. -- Southern Wesleyan University is holding a workshop
for teachers of writing in the elementary grades.
The
workshop, entitled "Before
Revision, Vision: Teaching Our Students to Read
Like Writers,” is being conducted by
Dr. Katie Wood Ray. Examples of successful approaches
to teaching writing to students in K-8 grades will be
shown.
Dr.
Ray will also discuss the role of vision in the writing
process across developmental levels and will introduce
participants to the importance of grounding students in
real world examples of the kinds of writing they may ultimately
produce. Active participation by group members will be
encouraged.
The
workshop will be on the Central, S.C., campus of Southern
Wesleyan University on Saturday, Oct. 30 , 9 a.m. to 3
p.m. The workshop fee of $50 will include lunch. Participants
who complete the entire workshop will be given a certificate
of participations, which may be used for renewal credits
for certification. Undergraduate students may attend for
a fee of $10, which also includes lunch. Registration
in advance is requested.
Dr.
Ray is a nationally known as a teacher of writing teachers.
She has published five texts for teachers of writing and
is a regular presenter at The Writing Workshop at Teacher’s
College, Columbia University.
Dr.
Ray is a graduate of Southern Wesleyan University and
earned graduate degrees from Clemson University and the
University of South Carolina. She is an experienced teacher
of students from elementary level through graduate school.
