SWU students serve community

Students who are new to SWU recently participated in a community service project as part of SWU Life Kickoff. Groups of students spent the afternoon Aug. 13 working in the community. From left, students Christina Collins, Tyrome Philson, Adrienne Long, Josh Tietje, Rebecca Ellwood and Chantell Stokes pause next to Rev. L.J. Harrington’s grave. This group of SWU students worked for the Central Heritage Society at Mount Zion Cemetery in Central, repairing historic graves and cleaning brush from the gravesites. Rev. L.J. Harrington was the first president of Southern Wesleyan University, serving from 1906-1908. Student service groups also volunteered at two Pickens County Habitat for Humanity houses, United Christian Ministries, Homes of Hope, Clemson Parks Department, Mosaic Community of Hope Church, Community Wesleyan Fellowship Church, Hagood Mill Historical Site near Pickens and a SWU park under construction by Professor Don Schaupp.
