Incoming freshmen students participated in Southern Wesleyan University’s selection process for the Goizueta Foundation Scholarship on March 17.

The Goizueta Foundation Scholars for Minority Scholarships fund is an annual scholarship awarded to an incoming freshman who is Hispanic/Latino, African American, Asian American or Native American.

Specific minority scholarships are available in computing, education, math or science. These require a minimum SAT score of 1000 (ACT 21) and a GPA of 3.2 or higher. Scholarships are also available for a major of choice. These require a minimum SAT score of 1100 (ACT 23) and a GPA of at least 3.2.

This year, four students qualified for this honor. These students were Philip Boyer of Central; Sierra Threatt of Atlanta; Stephanie Guerra of Fredericksburg, Va.; and Tomorrow Hughes of Spring Lake, N.C.

Arriving on Friday evening with their parents and friends, students had dinner in Founders’ Hall, where they had special music by Southern Wesleyan University’s own Sing With Unity choir.

Past recipients of the Goizueta scholarship provided words of wisdom to this year’s participants. Last year’s recipient Wallis del Rosario and 2002 recipient Melissa Rivera spoke to the group and encouraged them to have fun and be themselves during the interview process.

The students were interviewed individually by a panel of judges comprised of SWU faculty and staff. The recipient of the 2006-2007 Goizueta Foundation Scholarship is Sierra Threatt.

Upon receiving this award, Threatt said, “I am so thankful to God, first of all, to even be considered amongst the other elite students that were selected for the Goizueta Scholarship. To find out that I actually won was totally surprising, I was so shocked! In my eyes, we are all winners. God is so good.”

Threatt said she is looking forward to living on campus in the fall and playing with the SWU warrior women’s soccer team.

Her mother was equally excited saying, “What an honor it was to hear that Sierra was the recipient of this scholarship. She had no idea she would even come close to winning, especially with all of the talented students who were interviewing. What a blessing!”
