SWU graduates urged to lead, stay grounded in faith
Winter graduates received their diplomas at Southern Wesleyan University’s campus in Central on Saturday, Dec.15.
The speaker for the morning ceremony was Dr. Thomas Phillippe, an expert in religious and business matters. He urged the morning graduates to become Christian leaders and make an impact on the world.
“Christian leadership is something I believe in with all my heart,” Phillippe said. “In every age there comes a time when leaders should come forth.”
Dr. Phillippe has served as pastor, evangelist and denominational leader in The Wesleyan Church, has served as an associate evangelist for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and participated in crusades throughout the world.
Dr. David Spittal, university president, cited Dr. Phillippe as a faithful steward of his resources and “a true man of God and model of Christian leadership.”
In 1970, Phillippe resigned his church to organize Nationwide Management, which owned and managed health care and retirement facilities. His company grew to include 28 facilities, day care centers and a home healthcare facility.
Phillippe said leaders should seek to glorify God and to benefit others with their work.
The speaker for the afternoon ceremony was Dr. Lee Kizer, associate professor of business at Southern Wesleyan University. Using an electrical plug as a visual aid, Kizer urged graduates to stay “plugged in” and to allow God’s power to work through them.
“God has appointed a place for you. My encouragement to you as you go to that new place is to stay plugged in. If you do that, the power of God will course through you and cause you to accomplish His plan and His purpose,” said Kizer.
Kizer has been a member of the SWU business faculty since January 2002. He previously served as supply officer with the United States Navy and was a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 17 years. He has also served as a full-time minister and pastored for 17 years in two assignments through the Evangelical Presbyterian Churches in Asheville, N.C., and Birmingham, Ala. He has served as teacher and trainer in many contexts and assignments.
Southern Wesleyan University prepares students for leadership and graduate study in such fields as religion, education, music, business, medicine, law and a variety of civic and social service professions. Southern Wesleyan offers 35 major areas of study for undergraduates and graduate degrees in the areas of business, education and ministry. The university’s main campus is in Central and there are regional learning centers across the state, in locations such as Greenville, Columbia, Charleston and North Augusta. Classes are also offered in Spartanburg and Greenwood.
Southern Wesleyan University had two separate graduation ceremonies at Walden Tysinger Gymnasium on the university’s campus in Central. The 10 a.m. ceremony was for graduating students from the university’s Central and Greenville locations earning associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, and for students from all locations earning Master of Business Administration and Master of Science degrees. The 3 p.m. ceremony was for students from the university’s Charleston, Columbia and North Augusta locations earning associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, and for students from all locations earning Master of Education and Master of Ministry degrees. The university conferred 562 degrees, according to Registrar Rock McCaskill.
