High five on the golf course

Golf tournament benefits Southern Wesleyan

Golf teams teed off at the Pickens Country Club for Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Paul B. Wood Golf Tournament, sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

“We were so happy to have 26 teams compete in this year’s tournament. There were some great golfers who competed,” said Mary Costello, Southern Wesleyan University’s executive director for development. “The fierce competition and rain did not diminish the exciting and fun atmosphere of the tournament.”

Members of the first place team were Chad Hendley, Bill Silva and Andy Mitchell, all of Easley, and Charlie Runion of Greer. Each player on the first-place team received Nike Slingshot OSS Irons.

The second-place team included Marty White of Powdersville, Dave Bradosky of Seneca, Jeff Bell of Piedmont and Bob DuBose of Clemson. They won Nike Sumo Square Drivers.

Third-place team members were Bill Harley, Stephen Tompkins and Gregg Cooley, all of Clemson, and Al Shadwick of Seneca. They received Nike Slingshot Hybrids.

Closest to the pin winners were Jake Thompson of the Fletcher Anderson Team and Tim Wilson of the Johnson Control Team. They won Nike T-130 Putters.

The longest drive winner was Al Shadwick of the First Citizens Team. He won a Nike SV Tour Wedge.

This year’s celebrity golfer was Dale Gilbert, WYFF News 4 weatherman.

Proceeds from the Paul B. Wood Golf Tournament benefit The Promise Fund – the Annual Fund for SWU. The tournament raised more than $24,000 for the fund.

“The money from this annual golf tournament directly benefits students at Southern Wesleyan University by providing scholarships, as well as academic and program support,” Costello said.

The tournament is named for Dr. Paul Wood, a psychologist and professor emeritus at Southern Wesleyan University.
