Southern Wesleyan features jazz, vocals

Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on Southern Wesleyan University’s campus in Central will come alive with jazz Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. The Jazz Trumpet Project, a group of six gifted musicians from across the United States and Canada, features outstanding brass players Pat Harbison, Alex Yates and Paul Tynan, along with a powerful but sensitive rhythm section of guitarist Jeff McLaughlin, Bassist Ashley Summers and drummer Stockton Helbing. Upper Region Honor Choir

Friday, Jan. 21, 7 p.m., Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center

Southern Wesleyan University music professor Dr. Don Campbell directs a choral clinic with more than 200 high school students from 13 different Upstate high schools during the day. The event culminates in a concert Friday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. Admission is free. Amber James and Melanie Rowell Duet Recital

Southern Wesleyan University will present Amber James and Melanie Rowell performing a variety of duet selections from Bach to Broadway. Accompanied by the talented Jane Dill, they will present selections both funny and familiar. SWU Jazz Invitational

The Southern Wesleyan University Jazz Invitational will take place Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the campus in Central. The event features many of the Upstate’s finest high school, middle school and community jazz bands. This fun, relaxing evening will conclude with SWU’s own jazz band. Admission is free.
