SWU appoints student life vice president

Brockinton

Southern Wesleyan University President David Spittal has announced the appointment of Dr. Joe Brockinton as the university’s vice president for student life.

Brockinton was selected after a nationwide search.

“We are delighted that Dr. Brockinton has accepted the appointment and look forward to his assignment to this key campus position,” Dr. Spittal said. “He brings a national reputation for his leadership in student life through the development of a ‘relational’ approach to student life development.”

Brockinton currently serves as Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students at Asbury College in Wilmore, Ken. In his present assignment, he has developed a recognized program for student development and is a leader in the student life area among his colleagues, according to Spittal. His background includes both coaching and teaching in addition to various assignments in the area of student development.

He completed his undergraduate degree in biology and physical education at Asbury College, a master’s degree in physical education (exercise physiology) from the University of Kentucky and his EdD. in educational administration from the University of Louisville. Spittal said Brockinton has an interest in all areas of student life programming including active involvement in athletic coaching and programs.

“We welcome Joe and Willa as new members of the Southern Wesleyan University family and look forward to his leadership as we continue to build our student life programs,” Spittal said.

Brockinton will assume responsibilities for this assignment on July 1.

The Brockintons have two children and one grandchild.
