Greenville SWU Program

By Jill Hickey, AGS student

Like most working adults, I had a full schedule and was somewhat apprehensive when I began the AGS program. What makes my experience worth sharing is the truly life altering events that coincided with my pursuit of higher education. - Jill Hickey

I began my journey at Southern Wesleyan University January 25, 2001.

Like most working adults, I had a full schedule and was somewhat apprehensive when I began the AGS program. What makes my experience worth sharing is the truly life altering events that coincided with my pursuit of higher education.

I have suffered from severe morbid obesity for most of my life. Despite the difficulties that come with being morbidly obese, I have always had a positive outlook on life. Almost a year after beginning the AGS program, I began having medical problems, due to the obesity, that were interfering with normal daily life.

I made the decision to have gastric bypass surgery in January, 2002. Since that time, I have lost an astronomical 250 pounds, had three major surgeries and about 10 minor outpatient surgeries.

Believe it or not, I was able to stay in school with only a few breaks during major recoveries. The amazing thing about my experience is the way I was treated by everyone at SWU. I have had nothing but the greatest support and prayers for my goals and achievements from all of the staff at SWU.

There are many choices out there for working adults desiring to complete or add to their higher education, but I truly believe that SWU provides a unique support system. Many obstacles have occurred in the past three and a half years to keep me from continuing my education, but God has seen fit that I continue to pursue my bachelor ’s degree. God has placed people along the way who have influenced me, helped me and changed who I am.

I am truly grateful for the level of service I have received from the faculty and staff at Southern Wesleyan University. Thanks again SWU for all of your support.
