Tutoring and Learning Services
The Center for Transformational Learning (CTL) provides several methods for students to obtain free academic assistance including peer tutors, writing coaches, online tutoring, and Supplemental Instruction.
Peer Tutoring/Writing Coaches
Through the use of peer tutoring, CTL provides free tutoring in a variety of subject areas, including math, science, religion and the humanities.
Writing coaches work with students enrolled in freshman English courses to provide one-on-one assistance with all written assignments.
CTL supports online tutoring services to students through Smarthinking. With this tool, students can receive web-based tutoring 24 hours a day, seven days a week in the following subject areas:
- Intro Human A & P
- Intro to Finance
- Mathematics (basic math through Calculus, including Bilingual Math)
- Organic Chemistry
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program designed to increase retention, improve student grades and increase graduation rates. SI accomplishes these goals by helping students learn to solve problems, organize classroom materials, develop effective study strategies and meet personal and faculty expectations.
Here at SWU, Supplemental Instruction is intended to be a semester-long series of weekly group study sessions led by an SI leader. The SI leader is an undergraduate who has successfully completed the course with an "A" average. All SI leaders are recommended by faculty. The SI leader attends the weekly lecture, takes notes, meets with the course instructor regularly, and then holds three study sessions weekly to provide support to students currently enrolled in the course.
