For years, Southern Wesleyan University has offered programs of study in Human Services, equipping individuals to serve in a constantly growing career field and helping them to effectively prepare for further study in graduate programs.

Southern Wesleyan is expanding the program to offer the following new concentrations within its bachelor of science in Human Services (BSHS): Administration, Counseling, Criminal Justice, Marriage and Family Services, and the option for a specialized concentration. Though primarily offered online, these concentrations will also be made available to on-campus students at Central.

“We are very pleased with the redesign of the BSHS program,” said Dr. Daryl Couch, chair of Southern Wesleyan’s Social Sciences Division and assistant professor of psychology. “The core courses are aligned with the professional standards of the human services profession and the concentration areas allow students to focus more intently on particular areas of interest. With career opportunities expected to grow faster than the national average, we believe our graduates will be well-prepared to make meaningful contributions to service providers, meet the needs of clients, and participate in Christ’s redemptive work in individual and corporate life.”

The Administration concentration prepares current and future human services professionals in the public and private sectors to effectively shape and develop organizations with the ultimate goal of improving services and the effectiveness and efficiency of not-for profit organizations. Courses in this concentration provide students with a better understanding of management and organizational behavior rooted in Christian leadership principles.

The Counseling concentration focuses on how to assist individuals and groups with personal, family, mental health, substance abuse and career issues with the purpose of helping individuals live a healthy and productive life. This program is a good foundation for graduate work to become a licensed professional counselor.

The Criminal Justice concentration is designed for human services majors interested in pursuing a human services career in professional settings involving human services and law enforcement. The concentration provides an excellent introduction to the field of criminal justice, which is very helpful for many human services fields where law enforcement is regularly involved.

The Marriage and Family Services concentration focuses on the skills and knowledge needed by practitioners to work effectively with many of the demands families and couples face today. Southern Wesleyan’s emphasis on the Christian ethic of care is perfectly aligned with the needs of respecting and valuing what is important to couples and families while providing the support and empathy that serves to empower change.

The Specialized concentration is designed for students who might transfer in multiple human services credits from a previous institution or earned associate degree.
