Retiring academic dean to address graduates

Dr. Gloria Bell
CENTRAL, S.C. – A longtime faculty member of Southern Wesleyan University will address the 2005 spring graduating class as she bids the university farewell.

Southern Wesleyan University’s Dr. Gloria Bell, academic vice president and dean, will be the key speaker for the May 7 graduation exercises at the university’s campus in Central, S.C. She will retire at the end of this academic year.

Bell, a resident of Clemson, earned her A.B. at Southern Wesleyan University (formerly Central Wesleyan College); her M.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.

She has been a member of the Southern Wesleyan University faculty since 1977. Bell’s work has appeared in numerous publications and she has completed many academic presentations. Her social involvement includes working with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities Service Learning Initiative, South Africa; South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities; the Clemson Area Leadership Program; Wesleyan Women in Ministry; Women in Higher Education Network; and American Association of University Women.

During her career, Bell has been a member of Phi Delta Kappa; received the Susan B. McWhorter Outstanding Woman Professional Award from the Clemson Association of Women Professionals; was a Fellow for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, Chief Academic Officers’ Executive Leadership Institute; recognized by the South Carolina/American Council on Education, National Identification Program; was named Professor of the Year at Southern Wesleyan University; South Carolina Distinguished Professor; Clemson Branch AAUW Named Gift Honoree; and Outstanding Teacher, University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The university will have two separate graduation ceremonies May 7 at Walden Tysinger Gymnasium. The 10:30 a.m. ceremony is for graduating students from the university’s Central and Greenville locations earning associate’s, and bachelor’s degrees, and for students from all locations earning Master of Science, Master of Ministry or Master of Business Administration degrees. The 3 p.m. ceremony is for students from the university’s Charleston, Columbia and North Augusta locations earning associate’s and bachelor’s degrees, as well as for students from all locations earning Master of Education degrees.

The university will confer about 345 degrees, according to McCaskill. The average age of the graduates is 35, he said.
