An 80-foot flag pole is lowered into place at a new flag plaza at the corner of Clayton and Wesleyan drives. Flying over the plaza will be a large U.S. flag, a South Carolina flag, a town of Central flag, the Christian flag and the SWU flag. The plaza will open with a Veterans Day program Nov. 11.

Construction is underway on a new flag plaza at SWU, made possible by donations from friends of the university, alumni and area businesses. Plaza on Central campus slated to be ready for Veterans Day.

This fall, the stars and stripes will greet all who enter Southern Wesleyan University’s Central campus.

A new flag plaza being developed on the corner of Clayton and Wesleyan drives will feature a 28-by-30-foot U.S. flag, flying on an 80-foot flagpole. Alongside the U.S. flag will be four 50-foot flag poles flying the South Carolina flag, the town of Central flag, the SWU flag and the Christian flag. The U.S. and S.C. flags were donated by Sam’s Club of Easley. An 80-foot aluminum flag pole was donated by McKinney Dodge of Easley and was transported to Southern Wesleyan’s Central campus by the hauling specialists, J. Grady Randolph, Inc. The plaza is being fully funded by donations from friends of the university, alumni and area businesses.

Also part of the plaza will be plaques representing each branch of the Armed Forces, along with landscaping and a water feature that will enhance the tranquility of this reflective space. The plaza also pays homage to Central’s history, with beautiful granite stones from the “rock station,” long a familiar sight in downtown Central, forming columns on each end of a wall that will provide a stately backdrop within the plaza.

The plaza will officially open with a Veterans Day program at 4 p.m. Nov. 11. The public is invited to attend the program.
