    Phillip Mishoe, right, presents the 2019 Dr. David Spittal Community Award to Central Fire Chief Ed Reynolds for his contributions toward improving the quality of life for Central citizens, including his support of the town’s youth recreation program and service to the Central Fire Department. Mishoe, the 2018 recipient, is Central’s town administrator. Reynolds was recognized during the 2019 State of Central Address March 14 at Southern Wesleyan University.

    The 2019 Dr. David Spittal Community Award was presented to Central Fire Chief Ed Reynolds for his contributions toward improving the quality of life for Central citizens.

    Central Town Administrator Phillip Mishoe said Reynolds has played an active role in community life, including clearing trees and working on improvements to recreation facilities, sponsoring youth recreation teams, cooking barbecue for fundraisers for Central Recreation’s Super Saturday fundraiser for many years, assisting Helping Hands Children’s Home, serving on Central’s town council and in the Central Fire Department.

    The award is named for former Southern Wesleyan University president Dr. David Spittal and is presented to an individual or group who makes significant contributions to the greater good of the Central community and the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce, with an emphasis on citizenship and service; demonstrates enthusiasm, leadership, initiative, idealism, commitment, innovation and vision; consistently illustrates the ability to develop positive relationships and the skill to build consensus among community leaders; and effectively utilizes resources outside the scope of employment and responsibility. Recipients or their employers must be a member in good standing of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce.

    The award was presented March 14 during the State of Central Address, hosted annually at Southern Wesleyan University and organized by Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce and the Central Area Business Council.

    Additional awards included the 2019 Central Business of the Year Award, presented to Babinicz, Inc., recognizing Al Babinicz and his son Mike Babinicz for their commitment to the town through their investment in downtown properties; and the 2019 Central Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Rev. Royce Addis for his service as chaplain for the Pickens County Sheriff’s office.

    Central Mayor Mac Martin gave an update on the state of Central and Dr. Todd Voss, president of Southern Wesleyan University, outlined numerous projects on campus and praised the collaboration the university enjoys with the town of Central. Scott Drury, Southern Wesleyan’s vice president for advancement, highlighted events the university has brought to Central, including the S.C. Region 1 Science Fair, a career networking event and numerous fine arts performances. Drury also talked about the university’s new media production studios, currently being developed for media communication majors and numerous ways the university is honoring veterans and currently serving military personnel.
