    Southern Wesleyan University recognizes the academic achievements of outstanding students for the 2019-2020 academic year.

    In congratulating these students, Southern Wesleyan University President Todd Voss said, “While we are living through uncertain days right now, we remain steadfast in our certainty about the quality and determination of our students! It is in that spirit we celebrate and honor your achievements.

    Academic Awards

    TRiO

    TRiO Program Graduates were recognized by Cindy Trimmier-Lee, director of Student Support Services (TRiO). TRiO is a student support services program that promotes academic excellence and exemplary character among university students.

    Religion Division

    Religion Division Awards were recognized by Dr. Dr. Michael Tapper, chair, Division of Religion and associate professor of religion.

    The Spiritual Formation and Discipleship Award is presented by the Division of Religion to recognize leadership potential in Spiritual Formation and Discipleship and awarded to Zachary Wheeler of Kannapolis, N.C.

    The Excellence in Youth and Children’s Ministry is presented by the Division of Religion to recognize potential for excellence in Youth and Children’s Ministry and awarded to Jami Wright of Central.

    The Christian Theology Award is presented by the Division of Religion to recognize achievement in Theological Studies and awarded to Nicole Casey of Pickens.

    The Excellence in Biblical Studies Award is presented by the Division of Religion for excellence in Biblical Studies and awarded to William Shepherd of Greenville, N.C.

    The SWU Blue Blazer Award is presented by Rev. Ken Dill, associate vice president for Spiritual Life and Professor Jane Dill, chair of the Fine Arts Division, is presented by the Division of Religion in honor of Faculty Emeritus Dr. Robert Black. This award goes to a senior Religion major who has demonstrated exemplary servant leadership, cares for the spiritual formation of other students, and demonstrates a love for the local church. Receiving the award is Landon Davis of Asheboro, N.C.

    Alpha Chi Honor Society is presented by Professor Michael Keaton, associate professor of history. Entering Alpha Chi are the top five percent of junior class, top 10 percent of senior class; students must have completed sixty credit hours at Southern Wesleyan University:

Entering Alpha Sigma Lambda are the top 20 percent of students who are at least 25 years of age, have earned a minimum of 24 credits in a baccalaureate program, and have earned a minimum cumulative collegiate GPA of 3.2: David Wagner, Central.

    Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society is presented by Dr. Bruce Gay, professor of criminal justice. Entering Alpha Sigma are criminal justice majors and minors who have earned a minimum of 36 collegiate credit hours, 12 credit hours of which must have been earned in coursework in the criminal justice field; attained at least a 3.2 collegiate GPA; and who rank in the top 35 percent of their class: Addison Burch, Charleston; Anna Marie Garrett, Easley; Marcus Greene, Travelers Rest.

    IMA Accounting Honor Society is presented by Professor Laura Timmerman, assistant professor of economics.     Beta Beta Beta Honor Society (BBB) is presented by Dr. Staci Johnson, associate professor of biology. Entering Beta Beta Beta are biology, pre-medical, pre-dental, environmental studies, and exercise science majors and minors who have completed at least one term of the second year of a four-year curriculum, at least three semester courses in biological science, of which one is not an introductory course, with an average grade of B in each course, and have an overall GPA of at least a 3.0:

    The Dr. Susan T. Rouse Memorial Honors Research Scholarship is presented by Shannon Brooks, director of library services. The Dr. Susan T. Rouse Memorial Honors Research Endowed Scholarship is a financial need-based scholarship that is awarded annually to a student who is either a participant in an Honors Research course of study or who is identified as a student who has enriched Southern Wesleyan University through his or her academic ability and special talents in the field of Science and who has maintained a minimum 3.0 collegiate GPA. Receiving the scholarship is Dar’ia Chastain, Seneca.
