Dr. Amber James is an assistant professor of music, specializing in voice. Prior to joining the faculty at Southern Wesleyan, James taught privately and performed publicly in New York City. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in music education and piano from Southern Wesleyan in 2004. In 2010, James graduated from the University of Georgia with a master of music degree in vocal performance. She earned her doctor of musical arts degree in vocal performance and pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2018.
As a sought out voice and piano teacher in various parts of the country, James maintains a part-time studio in New York City in addition to her teaching duties in S.C. She regularly teaches students who Skype in from all over the world. She has performed opera roles in New York, Mississippi, and Italy. These roles include Santuzza, Chrysothemis, Amelia and Hanna Glawari, to name a few. She was also awarded a young artist scholarship for the International Performing Arts Institute in 2014, located in Kiefersfelden, Germany.
In addition to her teaching and performing career, Dr. James has also musically directed and conducted musicals such as Kismet, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Grease.
Dr. James was recently awarded the 2018 Young Leader Award from the Southern Wesleyan University Alumni Association. She will also be participating in a teaching fellowship with the International Performing Arts Institute in July of 2019. She has students performing in regional theatre companies and theme parks such as Disney World. Dr. James possesses a passion for music and educating others through various musical activities.
