Southern Wesleyan University religion professor Mari Gonlag, left, congratulates Zachary L. Childress of Thomasville, N.C., who is the first recipient of the Zondervan Theology Award.

Southern Wesleyan University religion graduate Zachary L. Childress of Thomasville, N.C., was the first recipient of the Zondervan Theology Award.

The Division of Religion faculty at Southern Wesleyan chose the recipient based upon keen interest in theology, evidence of personal reading and study of theology beyond the course requirements of his academic program, as well as upon his ability and regular habit of engaging in theological questions and discussion.

“Zach demonstrates regularly his personal engagement in the task of doing theology. Even during final exam week, he came into my office to raise a question and engage in theological discussion related to the doctrine of the Trinity, a very important theological topic but one totally unrelated to exam week for him,” said Mari Gonlag, religion professor. “He’s just always thinking theologically, which is a wonderful trait for a young pastor.”

Three additional religion graduates were recently recognized: Gavin Potter of Central, for excellence in biblical studies; Mark Tennefoss of Harrington, Del., recognized by the university in partnership with the Society for Professor of Christian Education – demonstrating potential for outstanding service in Christian Education; and Travis Hayes of Brevard, N.C., recognized by the university in partnership with the Association of Youth Ministry Educators – demonstrating potential for outstanding service in youth ministry.
