Dr. Michael Hylen Authors a New Book
CENTRAL, S.C. – Dr. Michael Hylen’s new book, “Cultivating Emotional Intelligence: The 5 Habits of the Emotion Coach” was released October 29, 2021. The book centers on how educators may build and use positive relationships with their students to help them grow in emotional intelligence. Additionally, this book seeks to answer the question, “What is the end goal of growing emotionally intelligent students? Is it a matter of understanding oneself and other’s emotions? Or is the goal simply to produce “good citizens”? This is Hylen’s first solo authored book to be published. He has also co-authored chapters in other texts.
Dr. Michael Hylen is Graduate Faculty and Coordinator of Doctoral Studies, Associate Professor of Education, and Interim Associate Dean of the School of Education at Southern Wesleyan University. Before transitioning into his role at SWU, Hylen served as an assistant professor of education at Louisiana State University – Shreveport and at Asbury University in Kentucky. At Asbury, he served as Department Chair of Grad Ed.
Prior to joining the higher education ranks, Hylen enjoyed a 25-year career as a public and private school educator. His most extensive work was as an alternative high school principal for students with emotional disorders and behavior problems. Hylen's first job after college was as an activities director at a boys' home on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. He says it was "challenging yet rewarding work, beautiful place to live."
