Dr. Sircy Honored with SCICU Excellence in Teaching Award

CENTRAL, S.C. — Dr. Jonathan Sircy, Chair of the School of Religion and Humanities and Professor of English at Southern Wesleyan University, received the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) Excellence in Teaching Award on April 22, 2025. Named the university’s 2024–2025 Teacher of the Year, Sircy was recognized alongside 20 professors across South Carolina for their commitment to student success and academic excellence. Each SCICU member institution selects one faculty member for the award, which includes a $3,000 professional development grant to support continued growth as an educator and mentor.
“We’re proud of Dr. Sircy’s accomplishments and thankful for his investment in Southern Wesleyan University students,” said Dr. Chad Stutz, Vice Provost of Academic Initiatives. “His dedication to outstanding teaching and student mentorship exemplifies the values we strive to uphold as a Christ-centered institution.”
“It’s a privilege to teach our students how to read and write more effectively,” said Dr. Sircy, “and it’s a double privilege to teach them at a university where I can tell them that reading and writing matter because these skills are tangible ways to love God and love others. SWU’s administration, faculty, staff, and students make it possible for me to make a living doing what I love, and I give the Lord praise and glory for it.”
