Southern Wesleyan University’s online Ed.D. in curriculum and assessment program received a No. 20 affordability ranking from EdDPrograms.org.

The website’s research team analyzed every university with online doctoral programs in education, comparing tuition, fees and funding opportunities for students before publishing their findings.

Southern Wesleyan established its online Ed.D. in 2018 after receiving approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). In developing the doctoral program, the university saw a need to place an emphasis on assessment, an area identified as essential for educators in the current outcomes-based climate. In addition to its online courses, doctoral students typically come to the Central campus for a summer residency. This year’s residency is being conducted virtually using Zoom.

Rasheem Neloms, who along with other Ed.D. candidates is preparing for his doctoral program’s residency at Southern Wesleyan, feels he can relate well to topics taught in Southern Wesleyan’s program. Neloms, who is principal of Wagener-Salley High School in the Aiken County Public School District, is working also to narrow his dissertation topic, which will be devoted to identifying predictors for academic success.

Tiffany Arnold, an algebra teacher at R.C. Edwards Middle School in Central, feels that what she’s learned so far in her Ed.D. program became very real when schools closed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and instruction was moved online.

“Because of the last two years in the doctoral program, I have all of these amazing ideas of what I think school should look like and this is the time that could happen,” said Arnold, now more than halfway through her Ed.D. program.
