    Byrnes High School physical education teacher and coach Debbie Holcombe was selected as the 2009 High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year for the southern district.

    Holcombe went to Tampa, Fla., to receive her award during the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance’s national convention March 31-April 4.

    A 21-year teaching veteran, Holcombe’s softball teams won upper state championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and were 4-A state champions in 2005, when she was named Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

    Holcombe received an undergraduate degree from Southern Wesleyan University in physical education and business administration and holds a graduate degree in physical education from Furman University.
