After a national search, Southern Wesleyan University is pleased to announce the hiring of Joey Maxon as the next men’s and women’s golf coach. Director of Athletics Chris Williams made the announcement on Monday (December 1, 2014).

“We are excited to add someone with the reputation and experience of Joey’s to our staff and university,” Williams said. “We are confident that his Christ-like attitude and vision for the complete student-athlete will thrive at Southern Wesleyan.”

Maxon joins SWU after spending the past three years as an assistant under Ryan Cabbage at UNC Charlotte. While with the 49ers, Maxon helped guide the men’s team to their ninth-straight NCAA Regional berth in 2013. Prior to his stint at Charlotte, Maxon as an assistant at East Tennessee State in 2010-11.

Maxon is not a stranger to the Upstate, having played collegiately at Clemson where he was a two-time all-American. He helped the Tigers to two top three NCAA Championship finishes and also won a pair of ACC Championships.  Maxon had 14 top-10 finishes as a Tiger including two in the NCAA Championship.

After graduating from Clemson with a degree in Business Management, Maxon played professionally from 1998-2006, competing in two US Opens (2001 – Southern Hills, 2004 – Shinnecock Hills). He won 11 mini-tour events.

Maxon will take over both the men’s and women’s programs at Southern Wesleyan. The men have had three top-10 finishes at the NCCAA National Tournament over the past three years and in 2013 saw Zach Moore crowned NCCAA National Champion. The women’s team was started prior to the 2012-13 academic year. Both the men and women will resume their seasons next semester.

Southern Wesleyan University is a candidacy year two member of the NCAA II and competes in Conference Carolinas. SWU will be eligible for Conference Carolinas and NCAA championships once admitted as a full member to the NCAA.
