More than 500 degrees conferred at Southern Wesleyan University
Graduates in Southern Wesleyan University's Adult and Graduate Studies anticipate the awarding of degrees during commencement Dec. 12 at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university's campus in Central. Bearing the university mace is Dr. Mickey Rickman, professor of mathematics.
Commencement exercises brought hundreds of graduates, their family members and friends to Southern Wesleyan University's campus in Central on Dec. 10 and 12.
Students graduating from the university's traditional program participated in the ceremony on Dec. 10.
The speaker for the Dec. 10 graduation ceremony was Dr. David Medders, who served as president of Bethany Bible College in Sussex, New Brunswick, for 19 years. Dr. Medders is currently vice president for resource development for the Association of Biblical Higher Education in Orlando, Fla.
Medders and his wife, Anne, are graduates of Southern Wesleyan University.
The title of his address was "Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant." Dr. Medders urged the graduates to be a servant as Christ was.
"Servanthood will be your friend, your priceless treasure," he said. "Servanthood will get you in the right position - on your knees."
He asked the graduates to remember humility and cautioned them about corruption that comes with power.
"God made us to be servants. It's who we really are at the core of our being," Dr. Medders said. "Humble yourselves. Trust God to lift you up."
There were separate graduation ceremonies on Dec. 12, for students graduating from the university's Adult and Graduate Studies programs. The 10 a.m. ceremony on Dec. 12 was for students earning associate degrees, bachelor's degrees and master's degrees from the Central, Greenville, Greenwood and Spartanburg locations.
The 3 p.m. ceremony on Dec. 12 was for students earning associate degrees, bachelor's degrees and master's degrees from the Columbia, Charleston and North Augusta locations.
The Dec. 12 morning ceremony featured an address from Carol Burdette, former mayor of Pendleton, S.C., and Southern Wesleyan University graduate. She is a graduate of Pendleton High School and served as mayor 1987-2009. She currently serves as president of the Municipal Association of South Carolina and is executive director of United Way of Anderson County.
Burdette compared people's lives with a book, citing God as the author and creator of our life stories.
"He has a plan for our lives," she said. "We must know who we are and whose we are."
She encouraged the graduates to pursue God's will for their lives.
"Keep your eyes on God and let him guide you," Burdette said. "With this new degree, you can move to greater heights."
The afternoon ceremony speaker was Harold Reaves, director of Homeland Security in Columbia, S.C. He earned a degree in business administration from Southern Wesleyan University. He has served the Columbia Police Department, is a member of the university alumni board and serves the First Church of God in Sumter as a licensed pastor and part-time youth minister.
Reaves praised the students for their dedication to higher education while balancing family and employment responsibilities. He challenged the graduates to improve the world by being civil to others and being faithful to God.
"I challenge you to be civil," he said. "Anger has become the national habit," Reaves said, but "civility is contagious."
He added, "Be joyful. Be filled with faith."
Reaves also asked the graduates to "pay it forward" by encouraging others who want to earn their academic degrees and being supportive of adult students as they attend classes.
"The concept is simple. Find someone you can help and do it," he said.

The university conferred more than 500 degrees, according to Registrar Rock McCaskill.
Southern Wesleyan University prepares students for leadership and graduate study in such fields as religion, education, music, business, medicine, law and a variety of civic and social service professions. Southern Wesleyan offers 41 degree programs in the areas of business, education and ministry. The university's main campus is in Central and there are regional learning centers across the state, in locations such as Greenville, Columbia, Charleston and North Augusta. Classes are also offered in Spartanburg and Greenwood.
