Latisha Smith, a freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., participated in the "Passing the Mantle" ceremony with her parents, Ken and Sarah Smith.

New students at Southern Wesleyan University received medallions to mark the beginning of their educational and spiritual journey during a Passing the Mantle ceremony Aug. 15. The ceremony focused on students making a transition into independence. Rev. Ken Dill, university chaplain, shared his own experiences as a SWU student to illustrate how God can provide beyond what we can imagine if we have faith. Dr. Joe Brockinton, vice president for Student Life, led the blessing of students and parents during the ceremony that marks an important transition into college life. The University Singers performed for the event.
