    Lt. Clebe McClary, USMC (Ret.) takes aim during Southern Wesleyan University’s Southern Sporting Clay Classic, an annual event where shooters test their skills on four courses. McClary was also the speaker for a dinner that followed the shooting activity. The event, which supports university programs, took place Nov. 1 at Evergreen Plantation in Starr.

    Southern Wesleyan University’s third annual Southern Sporting Clay Classic took place Nov. 1 at Evergreen Plantation in Starr.

    Funds raised from the Southern Sporting Clay Classic will enhance inventive learning opportunities for Southern Wesleyan students.

    There were more than 70 participants enjoying an afternoon of clay shooting on four courses at Evergreen Plantation in Starr. The courses included a competition course and three “fun” courses where shooters enjoyed a variety of shots from a covered bridge and an open field.

    Chris Kinert, of Anderson was the winner of the competition shoot with a score of 22 out of 24 clays. Mr. Kinert won a $50 gift card Sportsman’s Warehouse and wooden plaque.

    Concluding the event was a time to enjoy oyster appetizers, followed by a Southern Lowcountry Boil dinner.  

    This year’s dinner speaker was Lt. Clebe McClary, USMC (Ret.) who served as a platoon leader in Vietnam and now shares his faith and uplifting story all across the world. 

    “We’re thankful to the many participants who enjoyed a great day of shooting, food and fellowship in support of this year’s Southern Sporting Clay Classic. We are also very thankful to our sponsors who believe in our vision of raising funds for student scholarships and who support the event so generously,” said Tony Payne, Southern Wesleyan’s associate vice president for development.
