Southern Wesleyan University Awarded $50,000 Grant from Wake Forest’s Educating for Character Initiative

CENTRAL, S.C.—Southern Wesleyan University has been awarded a $50,000 grant from Wake Forest University’s Educating for Character Initiative to support its project, “From Knowledge to Wisdom and Character: Building a Transformational Core Curriculum in the Christian Liberal Arts Tradition.”
This visionary project aims to reimagine SWU’s core curriculum to further deepen students’ formation in wisdom, virtue, and moral leadership—hallmarks of the Christian liberal arts tradition. The grant will provide critical resources to enhance faculty development, curriculum design, and student engagement strategies that prioritize character formation as a central outcome of the college experience.
“This newly awarded grant supports the institution’s mission to not only provide quality education but to instill lasting values rooted in biblically faithfulness in its students,” commented Dr. William D. Barker, University President. “The funding will enhance the university’s ability to produce graduates heading into the workforce as teachers, healthcare providers, business professionals, criminal justice personnel and more, who will lead with both competence and character in their respective fields.”
Wake Forest’s Educating for Character Initiative provides strategic support to institutions that demonstrate innovation and depth in cultivating moral and civic virtues. Southern Wesleyan is among a select number of universities nationwide chosen to receive this year’s funding.
